Josselyn to Partner with NorthShore University HealthSystem for a New Behavioral Health Services Facility in Waukegan
A $550,000 one-year grant from NorthShore’s Community Investment Fund will help meet the mental health needs of Lake County residents
[Northfield] – January 20, 2023 – Josselyn is announcing receipt of a $550,000 grant from NorthShore’s 2023 Community Investment Fund (CIF) to support the renovation of a new mental health care space in Waukegan.
“Josselyn is pleased to partner with NorthShore University Health System Community Investment Fund to expand access to needed mental health services in Waukegan,” said Josselyn CEO and President Susan Resko.
NorthShore, including Swedish and Northwest Community Healthcare, selected Josselyn as one of fifteen local organizations across Lake and Cook Counties to collaborate on programs that enhance overall health and wellbeing and support local economic growth.
“These powerful partnerships are all about creating meaningful, lasting impact through data, relationships and resources,” said Gabrielle Cummings, President, NorthShore Acute Care Operations and Highland Park Hospital, NorthShore – Edward-Elmhurst Health. “In just our first year, we already made impressive strides and have increased our understanding of how we can work together to make our communities healthier.”
Improving access to quality behavioral healthcare in northern Lake County is critical. An estimated 35,236 low-income residents have behavioral health needs in Lake County. Studies show that people with low incomes are more susceptible to mental health challenges. Food and housing insecurity, living in unsafe neighborhoods, and other stressors created by low wages or unemployment affect mental health.
Josselyn is grateful for this expanded relationship with NorthShore. The two have partnered to recruit, coach and support Mental Health First Aid Trainers in northeastern Illinois. Mental Health First Aid teaches how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.
NorthShore’s Community Investment Fund began last year as part of the merger between NorthShore University HealthSystem and Edward-Elmhurst Health, demonstrating the organizations’ commitment to vibrant, community-connected care.
